Hi from Israel

I'm coming to you from the lobby of the King Solomon hotel in Jerusalem. I've been up for about 30 hours now, and this web terminal keeps erasing what I write. I hope to get something up, but can't guarantee I'll be consistently posting.

I finally got onto the plane after being diverted to security after telling them (truthfully) that I was carrying a wireless internet router for a friend. They just wanted to swab it; the other people directed there ended up being wanded, undergoing body searches, and having their carry-ons held until take-off.

The flight was long but mostly uneventful. Thank goodness my iPod's battery held. I overheard various interesting tidbits, including the fact that you can apparently smoke in the lavatories without detection if you keep flushing the toilet to suck the smoke away. Weird.

When I got to Israel, I tried turning on my cellphone. No luck, of course. But later, when I wanted to reset its time, it had apparently determined the correct time zone (GMT +2). But how? There was no signal!

We went to a tank museum where I ended up the chazan for shacharis. Then we went back to the airport to get some people who took a different flight. Then to a place overlooking Jerusalem. Then to the hotel, an orientation speech, dinner, and some more speeches. I'm exhausted, and probably going to collapse soon.
