Pick a job, any job

(part 1, part 2)

It's looking like NYC. The harsh reality is that (using the dating sites as an indication of community) no matter what city you pick, there's 7–8 times as many people in NYC. It seems that it's now at the top of my list.

The problem is now finding a job.

I haven't put together a resume because that's supposed to be tailored for each submission. But basically, I have:

  • 10+ yrs C/C++ experience
  • 8+ yrs Mac UI experience (mostly Carbon, but a bit Cocoa)
  • 5+ yrs InDesign plug-in experience
  • 3+ yrs Java, including a decent amount of JNI, EJB and JMX
  • Passing familiarity with Photoshop plug-in land, though I wouldn't brag of it.

InDesign plug-in experience is useless here. It's far too vertical-market to be an asset.

It appears that Mac experience is similar. Unless I can find a company looking specifically for that, it's not helping.

So what's left? Core programming languages. C++ and Java, of which I'd rate myself better in C++ but not by too much. But go search for jobs in NYC, and you find that 80% or so are developing financial software. And most of those require experience in that field, so I'm out of luck. Alternatively, they're looking for experience with fancy modeling tools, of which I don't know much.

What I do know is something that I've heard called “startup style”. A small team working together, planning products or features, and then executing. I'm used to planning and executing the difficult, daily. I'm looking for something similar, but am not currently finding it.

My friend, NYC is where it's at. Come on over! Everyone's doing it...
