New York again?

Well, yes, I'm back again in NYC. Last time I spent Shabbos in Kew Gardens Hills, so now I'm trying out the Upper West Side. Via Elisa I found a few people who are going to be hosting me, and I'm ready.

Yesterday was the flight in, departing at 6am. What that means when you arrive at 5:15 is a mad dash through check-in and security. But the plane didn't take off until 6:15 or so, so it turned out OK. It was a little jet, with seating 2×2, and my row 12 ticket was in the last row, but it's not the smallest plane I've ever been on. (That would be a 1×2 turboprop.)

Yesterday I had lunch, and then decided to check out the places I'd be having lunch and dinner at on Shabbos, and timing how long it took to get there. Turns out that it only takes 15 minutes, so I was reassured. The place for lunch was on West End Ave, so I wandered further west to overlook the Hudson River. River? Manhattan is an island. Isn't that just the Atlantic Ocean?

After dinner, I checked the online event list and found that the original Godzilla was showing at Makor. So I went. Interesting place. As for the movie, I'm not so sure. It's the stalwart of Japanese cinema, but it seems to have the same "blow it all up" fetishism you'd find in a modern Bruckheimer film. The part at the end about the superweapon (trying to not spoil it) didn't change that much for me.

Now it's almost Shabbos. I have to return some phone calls, and I'll see you at Bangitout's New Year's Bash on Saturday night.
