Turkey Trot 2005

Well, yesterday morning I ran the Turkey Trot at 8am. Woke up at 5:30am to get there early (got a great parking spot) and signed up for the 10K race (6.2 miles). My goal was to run it in under an hour, and I've been training for it for quite a few weeks now, but got thrown off by nasty shin splints for the past ten days or so. So unfortunately I didn't quite meet my goals.

The weather was pretty brutal; it was 20 degrees, wind blowing fierce, and snow coming down, but after the first mile, I didn't feel it too much. We started at Cobo Hall, ran up Woodward, took a right turn on Warren and looped around the African-American museum before heading back down Woodward to end at Cobo. My final time was 1:11:18, eleven minutes too slow. That means my pace was 11:29 per minute... not quite what I'd been hoping for, but then again, I taped my shins yesterday so they're not really hurting today - always a good goal as well. Next year I'll get under the hour mark.
As for future races, I think I'll be running a half-marathon this coming May and a full marathon (my first) in the fall in Columbus, Ohio. In between those two races, I'll be doing little 5Ks and 10Ks - www.runmichigan.com has good lists to check out in case you're interested in running as well.
I'm gonna start training again as soon as I can buy new running shoes :). How exciting! And thanks to everyone for cheering me on! Happy thanksgiving to all!
