Georgia on My Mind
Georgia on My Mind is the official state song of Georgia (the US state, not the country), an interesting fact courtesy of Wikipedia.
But did you know that Georgia's:
- official state fruit is the peach?
- official state bird is the brown thrasher?
- official state fish is the largemouth bass?
- official state fossil is the shark tooth?
- official state reptile is the gopher tortise?
- official state vegetable is the Vidalia Sweet Onion?
- official state 'Possum is Pogo 'Possum (created by Walt Kelly)?
Also, Georgia declares itself to be the Poultry Capital of the World, a title that I did not know was in dispute.
And rounding things out, they have statutes banning flag burning (whether belonging to the US, to Georgia, or the Confederacy) and establishing English as the official state language.
Comments
I now have a new found respect for Georgia (the state) laws protecting the flag and English as the official language. I fully stand behind both of these statues now that I live in the liberal state of NY and find that English falls behind Spanish as a first language. Of course protecting the flag is obvious (yes, I know freedom of speech, blah blah blah... shat up).

My favorite item was that New Jersey was going to use Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" as the state song, until someone actually heard the lyrics and realized it made reference to suicide. New Jersey - End it all Here - not such a good anthem.
