Eudora Thunderbird?

I used to be a huge fan of Eudora for my email, but eventually I gave up because of the non-portability of the mailboxes (yes, pulling off attachments means you're not mbox) and its inability to view HTML email. So I switched, very painfully, to Thunderbird.

So I was startled to see that Qualcomm is building a next generation Eudora as open-source based on Thunderbird.

Why? Is this a fork? Are the two email clients going to be stealing code from each other? Why not just enhance Thunderbird directly? (Goodness knows it needs it.)
