Waiting in line
Last week when I was in California, I took part in the Big Google Keynote Campout. To answer Rose's question as to why I thought it was a good idea, well, I'd come into town for work, so why not?
The only concern that I had was that I had nothing warm to wear. But I remember someone saying something about how, last year, the organizers let the campers stay inside. So I agreed.
That was probably a mistake as I was terribly unprepared. I had a windshirt, but nothing substantial. Rose lent me a warm fleece jacket which fit me surprisingly well considering she's much smaller than me and the jacket was sized as a womens' XS. But the big problem that I had was that I had nothing to insulate my legs, and as I napped in the tent heat drained out of me.
At 3:50 I got up, shivering. I headed over to the Denny's where I sat for about twenty minutes, coddling a cup of coffee. After that, I headed back to the line, where I just paced. That kept me warmer than sitting on the concrete.
Eventually we got in and saw the whole iPhone presentation, etc, etc.
Would I do it again? Probably not. Now that they've moved the keynote to Moscone West, everyone can fit into the actual room (no overflow rooms), and the need to be first diminishes. Plus, I would have liked to attend a party later that night, but was exhausted and smelly.
Oh well. I did have fun, so no regrets. Viva la Mac!
