What's wrong with you people?

OK. My annoyances so far in New York:

  • Standing “on line”. I'm in line, dammit! How hard can it be to get that right? I can be online while in line, if I use my Palm T3 and my phone, but while I'm just standing there, I'm in line.
  • No mail. Really. I filed the forwarding papers online before I left Detroit (not on-line!) but the USPS decided to just ignore it. They sent me a confirmation letter, but my brother's informed me that the mail has been piling up in Detroit. I'm going to be paying them a visit tomorrow.

And for things I just don't understand:

  • Seltzer. What's up with that? I tried it once a while ago, and fizzy water is just nasty. I can only take a few sips at a time before I have to stop. How in the world did it ever become a staple here?

One thing I'm not really complaining about is the whole “soda” vs. “pop” debate. I don't mind it at all; in fact, at times I used to say “soda” even while in Detroit. Yes, I know. Stone me.

Weekend update:

Friday night I went to OZ. After shul, everyone just hangs out on the street in front. I don't know if I'll ever get used to that. I don't know a soul, and I'm not really the type of person who can just go up to someone and start talking to them. But I had a dinner to catch, so I went there.

The meal itself was good, and so was the conversation, until we got into discussions about private vs. public health care. Our British ex-pat was reasonable in her arguments, though, so it didn't get as nasty as it could have. On the other hand, that topic's number two only to politics as dinner conversation killer. And a good time was had by all.

Saturday morning, I was going to go to OZ, but Leon was leaving at the same time, and he invited me to come to Young Israel. I did. It's a huge place. Mindblowingly big, at least twice the size of OZ. I ended up getting a seat in the back, and could barely hear a thing.

After that was lunch. I had it over at a couple Ezra and I met while shopping. The guests were primarily ba'al t'shuva types, and were in their 30s and 40s, as opposed to the 20s and 30s from the first meal. Once the meal was over, I wandered back to OZ, caught a shiur, did Mincha, sat somewhere random for the seudah shelishit, (since I didn't know anyone), and after Ma'ariv headed home.

I decided to be social, and headed to a Purim shpiel at the JCC (a sketch comedy show). The show was very funny, although many of the skits were full of cynicism about dating on the UWS. I was left wondering a bit why I came here, but the feeling passed.

Today was Home Depot day. They have a store on 23rd, so I found my way down there. I bought a dresser the other day that has at least three bad drawer slides, so I took one of them with me to try to find a replacement. No luck. Apparently Ikea uses a special size (17″ by .5″). I also asked if they carried the bolt-together type of furniture. No luck. I ended up just getting a bathroom scale (going to be trying to work out, and I'm going to need that).

So, tomorrow I need to get up early and harass the USPS employees, have Ezra mail me all my bills, and have Ezra hook me up with a few friends of his in the city. Oh, and do all the work that I need to normally do, too. Oh, and do furniture shopping on craigslist (online!) And wish Talya and Ari happy birthdays (tomorrow and the day after respectively).

During my tenure in Joisey I would tease the locals that Midwesterners stood "in line", but Easterners would have to stand "on line", physically standing on a painted line, since they wouldn't otherwise be able to handle the mental hardship of successfully queueing up... didn't make a lot of friends that way.
So is your parents' wedding anniversary nine months ago or something?

Nice, Sean. Wrong sister, though.
