In Search of Rabbi C
I wrote this yesterday on the train home:
After physical therapy today I was headed to Queens to hear Rabbi C. I had directions (from the MTA) in hand and headed off. I took the 7 from its beginning to its end - Times Square to Main Street in Flushing. I got out and found myself in Chinatown?
I hit an ATM to have some cash. Time was short and I thought I'd catch a taxi to where I was going. I walked and walked and walked. Finally, I realized that there was no way I was going to catch Rabbi C's speech. I relaxed and took note of my surroundings and decided that I was on a "walking tour" of the Asian part of Flushing, Queens, New York. It was interesting. I walked through what was labeled "historic" Flushing. There were some older buildings that were kinda neat, but too far away to look closely. I must say that the police station there is cool looking - it's a mini castle. Really.
I gave Leslie a call. She lives in Queens and I thought I might stop by and visit her, at least make it a purposeful trip. No such luck. She didn't know the cross-streets I gave her and didn't know how to tell me how to get to her. That idea down the drain.
I finally decided (with Leslie's suggestion) that it was time to go home. I stopped at a gas station for directions to a subway station. Picked up two candy bars... I was hungry.
The attendant gave me directions and I was off again. On my way I passed the "Temple Gates of Prayer" advertising two centuries of existence. On a sociological note I think it may be safe to say that the area I was walking through (approximately 34th and Parsons) used to be a Jewish area sometime ago but became Asian as time passed.
I walked along and came to where he sent me...it was the same staion I had come out from when I arrived in Queens. I had gone in a really large circle! No comment. Funny in a sick way :)
So now I'm on my way home, writing this note commenting on the evening. A way to wrap this up is to remember a comment to myself on the way back to the subway... "and this concludes our walking tour".
